Battle of the Port Cities - 12/31/2018
Old Town Alexandria is a charming port city, with lovely historic homes, fun restaurants and sweet shops. Its easy proximity to the hustle and bustle of DC offer something of the best of both worlds... until you get your mortgage bill, that is.
We travelled all over the USA and Old Town has many pros. All of the culture, the museums and nightlife of DC is just across the river and a great dinner is only steps away. Unfortunatley, historic homes in good repair above 2000 sf are well above $1M... and this was more of a mortgage than we were looking for.
By contrast, the port city of Wilmington NC offers better weather, is also on the river, but has some added bonuses. The fun and funky downtown has an artistic flair that Old Town has long since lost, with the incoming expensive boutiques. Great eats, at a fraction of the price- a plethora of historic neighborhoods, most of which are walking distance to downtown. Large lawns, lazy front porches... this is where

depends what part you live in - 4/9/2017
Alexandria is different depending on what part of it you are in. There is a huge strata of rich and poor, with a few middle class neighborhoods in between. Old town is mostly for the 1%, however there are some "run down" areas of Old town and plenty of Section 8 mixed in. The parts of Alexandria that border Arlington - colloquially called "Arlandria" are more down to earth and livable, but even there you need to have nearly a 6 figure income to buy a house. Arlandria is more peaceful than Old Town, as Old Town is more built up and touristy. Old Town is a city of it's own, reminiscent of New England in some ways, as it is an old port town. Old Town has the air of "old money", and is a favorite haunt of active duty families, and those who work for military or defense government agencies. There are many Tea partiers in Old Town and the immediate area.
Arlandria is more suburban-Virginia, however there are a good number of "hippies" in the area, and the Del Ray neighborhood

Southwood Subdivinis in SE Fairfax County, Virgini - 4/4/2015
The mailing address in this area is Alexandria, or Engleside. Either way, it's SE Fairfax County between Fort Belvoir and Mount Vernon. The neighborhood has been here since 1971 and most of the houses are on lots of 1/3 of an acre, or more. The proximity to Fort Belvoir and it's newly built, massive hospital in addition to the standard commissary and base exchange draws military retirees here. Proximity to the Pentagon brings lots of younger military families because of the typical Pentagon stint. These families may buy a house, expecting a later stint in the Pentagon and/or retirement to the area. Still others are drawn to the area because of the mature trees and settled appearance of the area coupled with an easy commute into DC via the George Washington Parkway. The neighborhood has a few social activities per year -- 4th of July parade and annual block party -- that creates a sense of community. The proximity of Grist Mill Park and the dog park there and the larger sized lot may

Special Place to visit... - 1/5/2015
I highly recommend historic Alexandria as a place to visit and meander about, especially in Old Town. The prices are steep, but the genuine charm is almost unmatched in the nation. I love being near the water. It is definitely worth a leisurely visit several times over--an authentic tourist

Get over your selves - 6/6/2013
The area has its upside, but the traffic and the overall rudiness of everyone here is enough for me to leave. I've never lived anywhere where if you are polite enough to let someone into your lane when driving, the car behind you will always honk like a mad person and probably shoot you the finger. Happens every time.
Plus the area I live in is a nice area, but the people think that because they live there they are above everyone else. Everywhere you go here people talk down to everyone else, and always try and work in their neighborhood in conversation, as if it somehow makes them better. Hate to break it to you Alexandria, the community is not that exclusive, after all I live there (but I'm moving

Happy camper - 12/13/2011
Alexandria is really a good place to settle and raise a family, housing is getting very expensive compared to most part of the country, but good schools, very few crimes, proximity to Washington DC, and all the political attractions, lots of museums, home of George Washington, populated with a mix of all countries and continents, cannot get bored, and I love it,
