Jackson is Mississippi’s largest city and a hub of government, commerce, and manufacturing for the state. Civil War fires wiped out much of the town’s antebellum feel. However, there are several points of historic interest, including the capitol building and some attractive older city neighborhoods close in. Some new development is moving to the north towards Canton, home of a Nissan plant.

The Ross Barnett Reservoir offers water recreation and historic country drives radiate in all directions, notably north on the Natchez Trace to Canton and beyond. The University of Mississippi Medical Center adds to a strong network of healthcare facilities. There are several smaller colleges, and the area has a stronger arts presence than one might expect for such a city. Cost of living is among the lowest of capital cities- the area is making progress but still has room for improvement.

The city is located in a wide river plain surrounded by gently rolling terrain and pine forests. The climate is significantly humid most of the year with short mild winters that include frequent cold spells. Summer temperatures reach 90 degrees or higher every 2 out of 3 days. Extended periods of very hot weather are rare. Rainfall is abundant and well distributed throughout the year. Thunderstorms are common, occurring 1 out of 3 days during summer. Fall is typically the driest season. Winter snow is minimal with 2 of 3 years having no measurable snowfalls. Ice storms occur occasionally.
